Sacred Harp clip art

On the Sacred Harp Friends Facebook group, someone asked for Sacred Harp clip art. So I made a couple of images — a Sacred Harp leader, and a Sacred Harp singer — in both outline and filled versions. I’m releasing these four images into the public domain.

The first two images are a finer line, and will look good in larger sizes. The next two images are a thicker line, and can be shrunk down considerably. The images here are 1920 pixels wide.

Palo Alto Sacred Harp in Frontiers in Psychology

Esther Morgan-Ellis mentions Palo Alto Sacred Harp in her article for Frontiers of Psychology, published online on March 19, doi: 10.3389/fpsyg.2021.627038.

She wrote: “I also attended two annual Sacred Harp events that were reimagined as zingings: the Palo Alto Virtual “All-Day” Mid-Day Zinging (August 22 [2020]) and the Minnesota Convention (September 26).”

Beyond that, she doesn’t really mention the Palo Alto singers. From what I remember of that singing, it was pretty much of an insider event, so it probably didn’t mean much to someone who didn’t already know us.

The article is still worth reading, describing as it does the ways Sacred Harp singers have adapted to the pandemic. Available free online.

Indian Melodies

I’m making a version of Indian Melodies available as a print-on-demand book from Lulu.com.

Indian Melodies features tunes by Thomas Commuck, a member of the Brothertown Indian nation. This was the first musical publication by a Native composer in the U.S., and was published with 4-shape note-heads. This inexpensive, legible, and complete edition is designed for use by Sacred Harp and shape note singers; it is sold at cost.

Due to Lulu’s printing limitations, this edition is bound across the top (long edge), instead of across the end (short edge) as is customary with shape note tunebooks. Since this edition is issued under a Creative Commons license, you are welcome to reprint it with whatever binding you prefer.

Golden Gate 2012: 183 Greenwich

Paul leading no. 183 Greenwich from The Sacred Harp (1991 Denson edition), at the eighth annual Golden Gate All-day Singing, 22 April 2012, held at the Potrero Hills Neighborhood House in San Francisco, Calif. and sponsored by Bay Area Sacred Harp.

Friendliness and a sense of humor are never out of place when leading a tune. N.B.: Paul has been singing Sacred Harp in the Bay area since the 1970s.
